It’s Day 3 and so far so good! I have fasted on a number of occasions in this lifetime. The most intense one was 2 years ago when I went for about 11 days on the lemonade diet. It was rather challenging and the urge to eat and the hunger pangs were vicious. I experienced more side effects than any other detox. In fact, as popular as the lemonade diet is, I would not personally recommend it to anyone. I experienced excess vaginal yeast from the abundance of maple syrup I put into m body. This Creative Raw Food Liquid Detox Cleanse, however, is unfolding in a whole new and improved way. So far, I literally have no desire to eat and feel so much more alive. One of the noticeable things about cleansing or fasting is that you begin to acquire more energy, feel lighter in your core and your senses become heightened. Today was one of the most positive and productive days that was influenced by my detox.
I began my day with water, as always. I drank two full glasses of water with lemon, then urinated. I usually keep a glass and a bottle of water on the nightstand next to my bed. I have a history of waking up in the middle of the night thirsty. I’ve heard on a number of occasions that it is a sign of sugar imbalance, diabetes. I’ve never been tested to discover I have a high blood sugar level nor have I had an reason to believe that I am diabetic. In fact, when I was pregnant, like all women, I experienced a blood sugar fluctuation. Other than that I have no reason to believe I am diabetic, no tests have revealed nor will I rush to a doctor in fear. My grandmother was diabetic and as a little girl, I watched her stick her creamy colored thighs many times.
Next I made it to the kitchen where I prepared my psyllium husk and flaxseed mix in fresh grape juice diluted with 75% water. Psyllium has no taste though the flaxseed has a bit of a nutty flavor. It’s important that you shake up the mixture well and drink immediately. And when I say immediately, I mean hold the container to your mouth and don’t stop until its empty. Next I drank two full glasses of room temperature water in which I added a tablespoon of chlorophyll and a few squeezes of lemon. Upon completion, I made a b line to the bathroom to sit on my throne.
Before I go further, I’d like to offer a warning around psyllium husk. The reason why you have to drink it down quickly before oxygen hits it is because it cakes up and hardens. The goal is for it to sweep the walls of the colon and then clunk together the waste for release. When it comes out then it is neatly compacted for a smooth movement. In addition it is mandatory that you drink plenty of water throughout the entire day beginning immediately after you drink the psyllium mix. I cannot overemphasize this. Failure to do so will leave you in extreme pain in the abdomen area and lower back and results will be counter to what you’re trying to achieve. Instead of releasing you will become constipated. So if you will be challenged in your water intake then perhaps you may want to consider another substance to sweep the walls of your colon. Raw brown rice is another source for cleansing the colon according to a number of alternative therapists, the holistic health community and a few individuals I know. My friend uses this method but I personally have not tried it before. If you are going to use psyllium then smaller quantities would probably be best. I do 2 tablespoons and as I go along I will actually decrease the dosage and not exceed a week.
It’s amazing how the phrase, “You’re full of shit” can be actualized, particularly, when you go through a detoxification. In this detox I am utilizing raw foods in liquid, purified forms. And so far, I’ve taken in mostly fruits, juices, water and teas with a bit of carrot and celery on Day 2. Each day I am having at least 4 sizeable bowel movements and each time I look at it, I am blown away, totally amazed at how much my body has stored. As I flush the toilet, I bid the past goodbye – the people, things, thoughts and vibrations that are all contained in the waste from my body and in which I no longer need to carry. I am feeling an increasing lightness in my core and very energized. I notice that I am less cloudy in my head and my vision is becoming clearer. This connects me deeper with my body and inner world.
One of the challenges of being on a fast or detox is living in a household where others are not going along. I have a 12-year old son. I have to prepare his food each day and therefore, I am handling foods that I am not eating during this process. I began the detox while he was with his Dad. He got back yesterday, so I have to adjust. It can be a temptation to your tummy or I should say my inner child because she is the one that loves food. The tummy knows when its full, yet, we have the tendency to keep eating, regardless. Need to say that these are moments and signs that say you are turning to food for emotional support and comfort instead. And I am totally guilty of that. I found myself picking up a piece of almond milk cheese to put into my mouth when I quickly paused and realized that I not allowed to eat any food. This brings up a common issue around couples who have differing diets. It takes commitment, will power and restraint to refrain from indulging especially when you are the chef of your home. So I take my hat off to those individuals who have mastered this discipline, as I am certain that it takes time.
After getting my son off to school, I prepared for my sunrise agnihotra meditation. This is a ritual I began doing late last year, so I am very much into the rhythm of being still with the fire at sunrise and sunset. After agnihotra, I got on my mat and did 35 minutes of yoga. While on the mat, I did a self-massage in my abdominal and womb area. And I repeat it at night when I laid down to sleep. As a massage therapist, I naturally touch, feel and massage myself so doing this comes much easier and naturally for me. I highly recommend self-massages and self-care to all. Breathing and stretching is a big part of my routine. During this cleanse I am spending more time in each of these events and extending my postures beyond my comfort zone. After yoga, I danced to get the energies moving and circulating from my pelvic region through out the rest of my body.
Next, I ran a nice hot bath and poured sea salt in it. I immersed myself in it and did a bit of reflexology on my feet and hands. Taking a bath for me always evokes moments of meditation and being one with the water element and Mamie wata or Yemeya.
I had a packed day yesterday and as a result by 7:30pm I was ready to retire. Throughout the day, I drank 5 cups of teas and intermittently had water with chlorophyll and lemon. Drinking a glass of room temperature water every hour is a good habit to develop or you can do 3 glasses every 3 hours. I am doing more during this fast and am stocked up with 2 cases of distilled water, which may be finished by Sunday. YEP, I am quite big on water!
During the day, I observed myself. I was more bubbly and alive; I felt more love for myself and cultivated powerful self-dialogues of love and union. I reminded myself of how beautiful and powerful I am. I commended myself for embarking upon this path and thanked all of me for going along without resistance. I felt wonderful! And the moments were clear and visible. My interactions with others - and I had a lot of that today - was positive, upbeat and productive. I was able to accomplish more than I ever imagined. I have been trying to rent out my basement unit for almost two months. I’ve only made two attempts at creating a notice and rarely got any response. Not this time! I placed an ad on Craigslist on Tuesday and I’m still getting responses and screening people. I finally met one ideal tenant that will be taking the space. I got a call from the owner of Joe's Movement Emporium (Brooke) whom I had not spoken with in over a year. My last call to her or email was not return. Well she called me and we had a good business conversation. She's invited me to be her guest on Saturday to see "The Ass Chronicle". YEAH!!! The power of detoxing!! And I have only begun. I also heard from friends. One in particular is usually gloomy and monotone. Not this day. He was perked up and positive. I got two new clients and cultivated meaningful relationships. I am thrilled and loving this beautiful shift. It is true... life and creation begins within. And when you have a clean body, when you get rid of the old and create space within then you only leave room for the new.
Avocado Smoothie
(A new recipe I created)
- 1 very large avocado *
- Coconut milk
- Lemon
- Walnuts
- Organic Maple syrup or honey
- Sea salt
I peeled the avocado and placed it in the blender. (Avocados turns dark in color when it is out of it shell so one way to slow this process or prevent it is to add lemon.)
I added 2 cups of coconut milk, squeezed half a lemon, then added a small handful of walnuts, a teaspoon of maple syrup and a dash of sea salt and blended well.
* The avocado I used was not the little ones you often see in major grocery stores. I purchased mine in the Caribbean/African market.
